How often should you change your bed?

A good night’s sleep depends on more than just comfort—it also relies on cleanliness. While many people focus on washing their sheets, fewer think about how often they should change or replace different parts of their bed. From bedding to mattresses, each component has its own recommended timeline.

Sheets and Pillowcases:
These should be washed and changed once a week. Over time, sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, and dust mites. If you sweat heavily, have allergies, or sleep with pets, changing them every 3–4 days is even better.

Duvet Covers and Blankets:
Duvet covers should be washed every one to two weeks, similar to sheets. Blankets and comforters can typically be washed every one to two months, depending on use.

Pillows:
Even with pillowcases, pillows absorb sweat and oils. They should be replaced every 1–2 years. If your pillow has lost its shape or causes neck discomfort, it’s time for a new one.

Mattress Toppers:
These generally last 3–5 years. Replace them when they lose support or show signs of wear.

Mattresses:
Most mattresses should be replaced every 7–10 years. Signs it’s time for a new one include sagging, lumps, persistent back pain, or waking up feeling unrested.

Keeping your bed clean and replacing items when necessary improves sleep quality, supports your health, and creates a more hygienic sleeping environment. Regular maintenance ensures that your bed remains a place of comfort and rest—not a hidden source of allergens and bacteria.
